To Build or not To Build?

Is this a good time to build a log or timber frame home? The desire and dreams of log and timber frame home enthusiast have never been as strong to build the home of their dreams. For those people who are in a financial position to build there may never be a better time. Some material prices are coming down, interest rates are at an all time low and construction prices are somewhat negotiable. The answer is left to the decision of the one who desires to have a log or timber frame home. I would say that if you have the land and the finances are in place then the only thing left is the will. I would also say that there has never been a time of flexibility on behalf of the log and timber frame companies than now.

Window Choices

Twenty five years ago one in 100 customers would ask about the windows included in the package. The answer was "all wood, double hung, double glazed." End of discussion. Today 50 out of 100 customers will ask about the windows and their interest is in energy efficiency and maintenance. Although the choices are many, the bottom line is windows are not very energy efficient. Our recommendation to our customers is to get a good quality moderate cost clad, double hung, double glazed, low E window. Our experience tells us maintenance will be more important over a long period than the energy costs associated with a good quality window. The high cost for a slight increase in R value isn't justified. Look for low maintenance features instead. The specific choice should be kept in line with the overall budget for the home. There are many brands in this category such as Jeld-Wenn, Pella, Hurd, Weathershield, and many more. Put that extra money into more effective energy saving areas such as higher rated furnaces, extra ceiling and wall insulation, and energy efficient water heaters and appliances.

Building "Green"

Long before the "Green" concept came into being Wood House Homes was practicing a form of it. Back in 1994 we were using standing dead timber to manufacture our logs. This practice not only saved live trees, it removed potential fuel for future forest fires reducing the intensity of such fires. We continue this practice today. Each of our log home packages includes the stains, finish materials and chinking products required for the home; all of these products are environmentally safe with no toxic chemicals to worry about harming humans, animals or plant life. In some of our homes we are using reclaimed barn wood for dormer and gable siding as well as building antique entry doors from reclaimed 100+ year old barn wood. Recently we have begun to employ reclaimed snow fence material from highways in the Pacific Northwest and near the Canadian border.
